In a November 29 op-ed in Time entitled "Stop Playing Defense on Hate Crimes," Professor of Psychology and Public Affairs Betsy Levy Paluck, along with co-author UCLA Professor of Political Science Michael Chwe, provides proactive steps and tactics for communities around the U.S. to combat hate speech and the environments that make this type of speech culturally acceptable.  Looking at behavioral science research that has shown the positive impact of peer influence and bearing collective witness, the scholars point to both individual powerful voices within valued community networks and the unified voices of large numbers of concerned voices as potent signalers of community values--specifically that hate is unacceptable.
